Technician Radio / Audio

I work with students and staff from across the College of Arts – from LSEJ and LSFM to Siren and Brayford Radio.

Radio has great reach across all ages and backgrounds through the wealth of radio stations broadcasting on FM and DAB, to online stations around the globe. But it’s not just about playing your favourite songs – there are untold extra skills needed to communicate with your audience: keeping to time, maintaining the attention of your audience by making a connection with them, and, most importantly, being yourself.

Most of my day is spent supporting students on the technical side of things: how the radio studios work, how your voice gets transmitted to people’s car radios, and how we can use audio editing software like Adobe Audition, Burli and Myriad Playout to craft stories and programmes that will bring a little joy to your audience; but I also work closely with Siren Radio and Brayford Radio to help make the practice a reality. You’ve made a great radio programme or you’ve recorded and edited a news story that our audience need to hear – let’s get it out there!

I have a BA is history, an MA in journalism and I’m currently studying towards my PhD on the pros and cons of broadcast regulation and how the print media can adapt to a similar form of regulation to help protect against breaches of privacy whilst not taking away their right to free speech.
